Nutrition Facts Label Reading Workshop
Most people rely on the convenience of packaged foods. Nowadays there is an overwhelming number of food products that are available at the grocery store! While many products are high in sodium, cholesterol, and saturated fat, the packaged food scene has evolved. More and more companies are offering convenience foods that are healthy!
Unfortunately, there are many loopholes in the labeling laws that allow manufacturers to market food as healthy, when in fact it is anything but. The class will cover how to read a Nutrition Facts Label, uncover the loopholes food manufacturers use to mislead consumers, explain the basics of organic and conventional produce, and discuss how to prepare quick plant-based meals using convenient, packaged foods!
The class objectives include:
- Know the basic parts of the Nutrition Facts label and the nutrient guidelines for healthy eating
- Understand the difference between a whole grain and a processed, refined grain
- Be able to recognize common sugars and additives in food products
- Be able to discern between organic conventional produce
